What Foldcam sends anywhere
Nothing. Foldcam never sends your videos, photos or anything about you anywhere. It has no ads, no analytics, no crash reporting, no advertising identifiers and no third-party dependencies of any kind.
There are exactly five places the app can send you, and each one hands you over to iOS or to another app:
- this website, rarelyimpossible.com/foldcam, opened in your browser;
- this privacy policy, opened in your browser;
- a support email to [email protected], composed in your mail app;
- iOS Settings, if you need to change the camera or microphone permission;
- the Files app, to show you the folder your videos and photos are in.
When you share a clip or photo, the iOS share sheet hands that file to whichever app or person you pick. That only happens when you choose it, and Foldcam plays no further part.
Opening a web link means your browser contacts this website, the same as any other link you tap. Nothing identifying you is attached to it.
Permissions the app asks for
On first launch a “Welcome to Foldcam” screen asks for the camera and microphone together, with an “Allow Camera & Microphone” button. You can say no, and change your mind later in iOS Settings › Foldcam.
Camera
“Foldcam uses the camera to record videos and take photos for your projects.” Without it there is nothing to record or photograph. Videos and photos go straight to files in your project folders.
Microphone
“Foldcam records audio with your videos.” If you refuse it, Foldcam still records — silently — and shows a microphone warning on the recording screen so you know.
Photos (importing only)
When you import existing videos or photos, Foldcam uses the system photo picker. The picker runs outside the app: Foldcam never asks for access to your whole library and never browses it, and only receives the items you chose, as the original files (they are not re-encoded). They are copied into your project folder. Nothing is written back to your library and nothing is deleted from it.
Location
Foldcam never asks for your location.
Foldcam never saves anything to your photo library. That is the whole point of the app. (If you share a clip and choose Save in the share sheet, that is iOS saving it at your request.)
Where your files live
By default, projects and clips are stored in the app's own Documents folder, which appears in the Files app as On My iPhone › Foldcam. A project is a folder; a clip is a normal video or photo file inside it.
In Settings › Storage you can choose a different folder — iCloud Drive, Dropbox, a USB drive, anywhere iOS can reach. Foldcam then records straight into it. Your choice is kept on the device as a security-scoped bookmark, which is iOS's way of remembering that you granted access to that folder; it is not shared with anyone.
While a recording, photo, trim, title change or import is in progress, the file being worked on lives in the app's temporary folder on your device and is moved into your project, or removed, when it finishes. That includes the separate parts of a recording when you switch camera mid-way, the single clip they are joined into, and the copies the photo picker hands over.
Settings are kept in the app's own preferences on your device: your default camera and default mode (video or photo), the name of the project you used last, the folder you chose (as the bookmark above) and whether the player is muted. Each project folder also holds a small hidden .foldcam.json file with that project's own choice of camera and of video or photo, so it travels with the folder.
If you use iCloud Backup, files in the app's own folder are included in your iPhone's backup like any other app's documents, under Apple's terms. Files you save into iCloud Drive are covered by Apple's iCloud terms; files you save into another provider's folder are covered by that provider.
What is written into your videos and photos
Foldcam writes the recording date into every video, and the title into the video's metadata when you give it one. For a photo, the title goes into its IPTC Object Name and TIFF image description, the standard title fields that Photos and other apps read, without recompressing the image. Foldcam reads the date a photo was taken from it, to date imported photos, but never changes it. The title also becomes the file name, in lower case with underscores, followed by the date and time.
Photos are saved as JPEGs of up to about 12 megapixels and, like videos, the right way round rather than mirrored.
Foldcam adds no location data and never asks for your location. As with any iPhone recording or photo, whatever metadata the camera itself writes (such as the device model and camera settings) stays in the file; Foldcam neither adds to it nor strips it.
If you delete the app
Deleting Foldcam deletes everything still inside the app's own folder, including any projects and clips there — iOS removes an app's documents with the app. Clips saved into a folder you chose stay exactly where they are, because that folder belongs to you, not to the app. If that matters to you, choose a folder in Settings › Storage; the app's “How Backups Work” screen explains the trade-off in the same words.
Children
Foldcam collects no data from anyone, including children.
